Your bedroom, Your kingdom: How to design my bedroom?

A delicate bedroom takes your nightmares away and frees your body from negativity. We spent a lot of time in our bedrooms, even if we’re not awake, we’re still there. That’s why we need to plan our bedrooms well and make sure we take care of every detail.

To design your bedroom you need to design 3 phases:

  • Bedroom paint colors
  • Bedroom floorings
  • Furniture and storage

I’ll walk you through each step of these until you reach your design!

Bedroom paint colors

Color Scheme

It takes a lot of planning to make sure in the end you get a coherent looking bedroom where every color in the room is holding hands with the other colors. You don’t want to feel like your colors are fighting because then you’ll start absorbing the negativity and feel less comfortable.

To understand what a color scheme is, it’s an abstraction of the elements of a room into a set of colors that work well together. You can read more about color schemes and color theory on Wikipedia for reference.

Paint Colors

The first step in choosing your bedroom paints is choosing a color scheme that represents your room. The same way I described in the interior design intro tutorial. After choosing your color scheme you now need to choose your wall’s color.

You have to make a choice, either go simple and have a single color for your walls or have an accent wall that has a different color or wallpaper. Myself, I prefer having the bed’s wall as an accent wall with a different color from your scheme. This gives the room a sense of orientation.

Choosing paint colors isn’t easy, as you need to choose a very specific tone of a color. You don’t want to just pick a neutral color. No! find a suitable color from your scheme that would do well, and if you don’t you can then choose a neutral color with a warm/cool undertone like gray or off-white.

Choosing the color tone is not simple, you need to see them clearly before you choose. Tip: Never depend on smartphones/laptops/TVs or any monitor to compare wall paints, since they tend to change from screen to screen according to screen settings. Rather you should buy a color palette from paint manufacturers like SW so you can choose the exact degree that would work. Plus you can compare it to the cloth/linen colors for your bed/headboard/curtains and compare everything early on so you can have a sense if they stick to your scheme.

Bedroom floorings

The floor has to be chosen, however, it’s not as simple as paint colors as it tends to have patterns. This makes it a powerful addition to the room if you got to choose the correct choice.

Light grey HDF flooring makes the room like ultra-modern

There are many choices for flooring, these include:

  • High-density fiber (HDF)
  • Ceramic
  • Carpet

My favorite being the HDF floorings since these look ultra-modern and aren’t made of real wood, so they’re cheaper and easier to replace.

There are endless patterns of HDF floorings at vendors, you need to choose a color tone and pattern that would go well with your overall color scheme. That’s why you’re going to use the palette from Sherwin Williams to place your wall paint color sample over an HDF sample and see how well do they align.

That’s the only way you can align paint colors and flooring perfectly.

Carpet is used in many hotels and is considered a luxurious choice, however, for health complications, I advise against using it because it’s not good if you have a pet or if your rooms are exposed to any sort of dirt/sand/dust.

Furniture and Storage

Rule number one is to keep in mind that everything in the room that can be used as storage, should be storage.

Under your bed, your corner wardrobe, inside your tables and basically every place that will have some volume inside should be used as storage. Storage is the most functional aspect of your bedroom.

A typical bedroom can have the following pieces of furniture.

  • Bed
  • 2 Nightstands
  • Wardrobe
  • Vanity

These are the basics.

I would recommend having all of them if your room has enough space.

The wardrobe has to be as big as possible. If you’re having problems finding a place for a big enough wardrobe, use corners. Corner wardrobes are amazing and have huge storage potential.

Purple

On the other side, choosing your bed is fairly easy. choosing your bed’s headboard is very hard.

It will take time to find a nice looking headboard that suits your needs and has a nice color. Again, the samples from Sherwin William’s will help you choose the headboard since you’ll be directly comparing your paint color to the headboard.

In the end, I would like to wrap up with this advice. You have to plan everything well in advance.

Invest time into planning and you’ll have a room that fits all your needs.

Chandeliers

Choosing a chandelier can be tricky, however, it’s a core component to any bedroom. It captures eyes quite quickly and gives an impression. It has to be aligned with your room’s decor in order to feel the cohesion in style. And top of the list, it has to provide enough lighting to keep your room well lit at nights and be suitable for reading/writing/chit-chats and so on.

There are many styles for chandeliers, we will browse the most common styles. In the end, the choice is yours to make, so try to visualize each style and each product before you deploy it so you can plan everything well.

Crystal Chandeliers

This is the number one choice for classic. It brings a feel of vintage and luxury to your room. It looks beautiful on its own, you don’t even have to light it on to witness the beauty of it! The glass and prisms in it will make light dance around the room and will reflect and decompose light giving an elegant theme to your room.

It varies in size, from mini to grand and also varies in the price range.

Traditional Chandeliers

Inspired by victorian times, these chandeliers convey the vintage style and everything it means. These chandeliers are a good source of light as they usually carry a couple of dozens of electric lamps or candles. These beautiful products will shine a light on every corner of the room. It’s highly preferred to have multiple mirrors in the room when you have one of these as the mirrors will help send light everywhere across the room helping the chandelier with the light intensity and distribution.

Bowl Chandeliers

A flipped dome upside down is a bowl, it’s usually a mix between a large bowl and multiple smaller bowls or just one large bowl. These can be made of glass, acrylic or even ceramic. They’re a preferred choice in dining rooms but also a valid choice in bedrooms. they softly diffuse light to make everything around them feel warm and cozy.

Drum Chandeliers

If you’re not a fan of glass, then these ones are for you. They’re usually shaded with cloth, paper or plastic. This style of chandeliers encompasses light within a disc resembling a drum. They’re preferred in large open spaces like malls or restaurants. They would look great if you have a large master bedroom. They look elegant and have a variety of colors and styles for them, whether you prefer gold, silver or brass, you’ll always find a suitably styled drum chandelier.

Lantern Chandeliers

This style has been alive for long, it’s favored by a lot of people. It’s inspired by lanterns which make it unique and beautiful and give a sense of minimalism and lightweight.

They’re made of a plethora of different materials, you’ll definitely find ones that suit your style. They can be made of metal, brass or wood depending on your style.

Linear Chandeliers

We’re slowly moving towards more modern looking chandeliers. First in the queue is the linear chandeliers family. They’re usually formed of a rectangular shape or an oval shape that lifts a few lamps or candles, although not much in number compared to traditional and crystal chandeliers.

This family of chandeliers is preferred over a kitchen island or a dining table. They would also work as an auxiliary lighting source in a master bedroom. They are sleek and give a sense of minimalism, which is a trend these days.

Orb and Globe Chandeliers

A sphere filled with a warm glowing light is definitely going to bring your room together. A glass, acrylic, fabric, paper or even metal can be used to form these chandeliers making them versatile and quite cozy. We can even find them in multiple colors that aren’t available for most of the other styles. You can use them as an auxiliary source of lighting in your bedroom or use them in hallways. They’ll bring warmth wherever they’re put.

Starburst and Sputnik Chandeliers

We can complement our modern styled or contemporary bedroom with one of these to give it a sense of space-themed decor. Once you hang one you’ll always get them noticed and complimented. Your guests will always notice them and that’s why a lot of people favor putting them on their front doors. They can be used in bedrooms along with a star-themed mirror and that would be quite matching!

Modern LED Chandeliers

The epitome of modern and contemporary. These chandeliers will give the ultimate modern sense to your master bedroom. They can also be used in a living room. The only downside is that some of these models are not strong in terms of lighting and thus my suite smaller rooms only. However, they look amazing and are perfect for modern to contemporary styles.

Choosing the right chandelier can be challenging given all of these styles. But I would recommend you stick to your theme and style. Don’t use a crystal chandelier in a modernly styled room, it will look odd.

Choosing Bedroom Decor

There are many elements for the bedroom’s decor that you could use. These elements are usually simple yet will give your room a complete sense of cohesion with the chandeliers and furniture. Choosing the correct accessories can be quite challenging sometimes as it mostly relies on your color scheme. However, I will list you a few accessory items that work well together and all you have to do is match color and location!

Floating Shelves

A very important and strong accessory in the interior designer’s inventory is floating shelves! The ease of use and the way they blend with other elements makes them the most common choice by interior designers. Also, them coming handy for storing small items or books makes them quite usable and not just a decorating element.

Floating shelves can be mixed with small artificial plants, books and/or figure art like small statues. It’s my favorite accessory and you should use it too.

Choose a color that matches your color scheme. White works extremely well with Grey, wood textures work well with off-white and white. So choose carefully.

Plant Pots

Plants are a good mixin with floating shelves, small pots on the shelves look tremendously beautiful. Whether you’re using real plants or artificial plants it’s a choice of yours although I prefer artificial plants because you don’t need to water them or have water drainage for them. All you have to do is clean them from dust. These small pots can have flowers or cactus or a mix between and that would look quite catchy when placed on floating shelves. Don’t place too much of them but also not too little.

Frame Canvas

The decor is art ? and to make so you can resort to art. Paintings are always an elegant choice for interior design whether they’re paintings of people or nature or even abstract art. In a modern scheme, I would always choose abstract art. The way these paintings mix the colors of the scheme makes them a perfect fit for interior designers.

They’re also easy to place, just choose empty walls and center a painting there. You either put one well-sized painting or an odd number of paintings, don’t place them in even numbers! Also, you can mix the sizes if you’re putting 3 or 5 paintings but make sure most of them are small and that their total size is almost the size of one large rectangular frame. You want them to be appealing to the eye.

You’re in control

This article was a comprehensive guide to the process of designing a master bedroom. It’s not an easy process and there are a lot of choices to make. However, I’ve given you options to follow. Plan everything ahead and plan them well and in the end, you’ll have a beautiful product. And always keep in mind that this room will speak your personality, not anybody’s and that’s why you have to make those choices and not delegate them to someone else. However, you can always ask for advice or ask whether certain items match but other than that it’s all you in control!
